MARY BRØGGER :: THERE AND BLACK
Extended through October 28, 2017
CURRENT EXHIBITION
Mary Brøgger :: There and Black
Artist Mary Brøgger returns to Chicago with a solo exhibition at UNUM. "There and Black" will feature new works that explore concepts of allegiance, fealty, patriotism, tradition and inquiry, using materials that range from 24kt gold to shag carpet.
Brøgger's sculptures and designed objects have graced and inspired Chicago for decades -- her Haymarket Memorial sculpture is an international site of pilgrimmage for labor activists and historians, her Recognition Panels use icons of achievement to demark the points of entry to Bronzeville along Martin Luther King Drive.
This is Brøgger's first solo exhibition in Chicago since relocating to Los Angeles in 2009. It coincides with the reinstallation of the Haymarket Memorial at DesPlaines and Randolph Streets this September, and a major indoor commission at the adjacent new EMME building at 165 North DesPlaines.
The artist will be present at the opening reception on Saturday September 9. The exhibition runs through Saturday October 28, 2017. Hours are Saturdays 12 - 5pm and by appointment.

E PLURIBUS :: REFLECTIONS ON THE FIFTEENTH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11
September 11 - November 4, 2016
It has been 15 years since September 11, 2001, and this anniversary is an important time for reflection.
Often artists make work as a respite from the times and contemporary issues, but the artists gathered here felt compelled to respond to the 9/11 attacks and the repercussions of those tragic events from which the world still reels. Through an unsentimental perspective, combined with beauty and craft, they call attention to, and offer opportunities for engagement about, topics ranging from drone strikes in Pakistan, to those detained without trial in Guantanamo, to the destruction and looting of ancient and contemporary culture from Iraq to Syria. On this anniversary, we can ask “what have we learned?” and hopefully find answers that can inform our actions in the future.
The artists represented are Mahwish Chishty, Amber Ginsburg and Aaron Hughes, Jackie Kazarian, Michael Rakowitz, Alison Ruttan, and myself, Barbara Koenen.
out of many, one.
Never codified by law, E Pluribus Unum was considered a de facto motto of the United States until 1956 when the United States Congress passed an act (H. J. Resolution 396), adopting "In God We Trust" as the official motto. Hocus Pocus.
